Guillermo del Toro, the guy who brought us the Hellboy film franchise, has written and produced the remake of the classic 1973 ABC TV show “Don't Be Afraid of the Dark” is finding its way into your DVD and Blu-ray players on January 03, 2012. The DVD disc will be available for the price of US$ 30.99 and the Blu-ray disc will be available for the price of US$ 35.99 and both discs will contain extra bonus materials such as The Creatures, and the Blackwood's Mansion.
The film tells the story of Sally Hirst (played by Bailee Madison), who is sent to stay with her father Alex (played by Guy Pearce) and his new girlfriend Kim (played by Katie Holmes) by her divorced mother. Moving in is hard for her as she's getting used to her new environment and her busy father's girlfriend. She feels alone, her only comfort is in the secret underground room she discovered while exploring. One of the workers informs them to stay away from the secret room. But they don't really pay it any attention and they go on with their lives. Sally starts to hear voices calling her name and she ends up going down there on her self. When she secretly opens up a gateway, she lets loose something that her whole family might regret.
The amazing atmosphere and the lighting of the movie are what will more than likely knock you first. You're taken several years into the history at the opening of the film and it feels real. The creatures are really weird and the music captures the creepy feel of the movie very well. The film fully clinches its own gruesome nightmarish ness, which is undoubtedly the most appealing thing about it. The cast seems to do the best with the material they're given, especially the performance of the young actress Bailee Madison is wonderful. There are a few hiccups in the general performing but overall this movie features some very colorful and evil imagery that makes the entire movie worthwhile.
