Warner Bros. Pictures has teamed up with director Salim Akil to produce their long waited remake of 1976 classic film “Sparkle”. The production of this remake was shelved since 2001 due to the death of Aaliyah Dana Haughton, who slated to play the lead role of Sparkle. Jordin Sparks will now play the lead role and Carmen Ejogo and Tika Sumpter will play Sparks' two sisters, Sister and Dolores while Whitney Houston returns to the big screen after one and half decades since her last film in 1996 “The Preacher's Wife”. Houston will play the mother of three girls. The screenplay is written by Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil, and the music score (Soundtrack) will compose by R. Kelly. The film is currently in production and is scheduled for release in 2012.
Like the original film, the remake tells the story of three sisters (Sister, Delores and Sparkle) with the gift of song. They are attempting to succeed in the music industry in the late 50s, but each of them runs into personal problems on the road to fame. Only one of the sisters “Sparkle” ultimately go on to stardom, while one gets engulfed into the street life, with painful outcome, and the other dislikes the life she's living and decides to leave for good.
