When turning a beloved children's book into a film you normally wouldn't be expecting the film makers to turn to a pair of inexperienced writers / directors with the adaptation. But that's what they did when they picked Phil Lord and Chris Miller to write/direct the first film. But in the end they were the perfect combination to take on that project. Part of what really sets that film aside from many animated films that come out these days is the ridiculousness of the proceedings. Where most animated films lately attempt to base some of their world in reality, Cloudy appears to take more of it's queues from the humor of Looney Tunes and other films that came before it.
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs has earned over $240m in box office sales internationally, which inspired the studio to think of another movie centered on the character Flint Lockwood. So they hired John Francis Daley, Jonathan M. Goldstein and Erica Rivinoja to twist a new story based on Judi Barrett's book.
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 picks up right after the first film left off, where a food making satellite gets uncontrollable, but Lockwood and his friends, eventually manage to stop it. In the Cloudy, Lockwood and his friends are forced to leave their homeland, but when the food machine awakens, this time producing living food monsters, they must return to save the world.
