The film also stars Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean, Russell Crowe as Javert, a police officer, Anne Hathaway as Fantine and Amanda Seyfried as Cosette.
For those who don't know the story already, it set in France in the beginning of the nineteenth century, centers Jean Valjean, a thief, out on parole after spending nearly two decades in prison for stealing a loaf of bread. After the involvement of the Bishop of Digne, who encourages him to become a better person, the story follows him as he tries to run away from his past life.
For the most part the film stays true to the original material; offering some great music now considered standards. For those who are film critics, this adaptation is fine entertainment which at times works splendidly.
