As in any industry, businesses are faced with the issue of how to raise more capital and grow the company. As of now, movie adaptation of young adult fantasy books to be a very successful business decision. They make up the biggest proportion of the theater-going people. Like The Hunger Games, Harry Potter, The Twilight Saga base on young adults in its books. The main character is a smart youngster who is dealing with teenage years and growing up in a single parent household. Hollywood knows this, and by bringing those books to the big screen, it is betting on the link the story will have with its young adult audience.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, DreamWorks Studios, who acquired the movie rights to Leigh Bardugo's young adult fantasy novel Shadow & Bone recently, has tapped Christopher Kyle (Kathryn Bigelow: K-19: The Widowmaker) to pen the screenplay for the adaptation. David Heyman (Harry Potter) and Jeffrey Clifford (Up in the Air) will produce the film.
Shadow and Bone is the first novel in The Grisha trilogy, which tells the story of Alina, an orphan of the Border Wars. She's not much of a warrior, and become friends with Mal, another orphan. Then one day as the soldiers are trying to cross the Shadow Fold, something strange happens and it turns out to be that Alina is actually a Grisha with some extraordinary powers. She's plucked out of the defense force and into a devastating new life at the little palace, where the Grisha work and train.
