For those of you who are not familiar with the 60’s TV series, and in truth it was before my time as well, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. was a spy drama set during the political and military tension between two superpowers USSR and the US and inspired by the success of the James Bond film.
No doubt the show was a trendsetting franchise that became a landmark in the spy genre on commercial TV. A Golden Globe award winner for "Best TV Series," it was undoubtedly one of the hit spy shows on TV and paved the way for many to follow. Main characters, Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin are the brave agents from U.N.C.L.E, whose opponent is Thrush, a group out to stop UNCLE in its bid for world supremacy. The tounge in cheek style of the franchise along with the various gadgets was clearly in step with the times.
The film adaptation of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. was first announced over a year ago, when George Clooney was attached to play the lead role of Napoleon Solo and Steven Soderbergh was linked to helm the project. However, due to medical reason, George had to leave the project. Steven also walked away from it, after he and the studio could not reach an agreement on the film's budget and who to replace George with.
Last month, news broke that Warner Brothers hired Guy Ritchie to direct the adaptation and Tom Cruise to play the lead role. Now Deadline reports that the studio has hired The Lone Ranger star Armie Hammer to play the role of Illya Kuryakin.
Warner Brothers is looking to The Man from U.N.C.L.E. as a possible franchise, so if the first film does well, expect more to follow.
