I was at first very doubtful of Defiance TV series, mainly with its tie in to the video game of the same name. I saw the preview and couple of behind the scenes footages and those were enough to convince me to see the show.
I like most of the Post-Apocalyptic films and television dramas. Defiance has potential based on the few episodes they have shown up to now. While science fiction TV dramas that take place on Earth are apparently not as influential as those set in space, this show kind of brings space to Earth by introducing several alien races. The story is centered on a guy named Joshua Nolan (Grant Bowler) and his adopted daughter Irisa (Stephanie Leonidas) moving to St. Louis and subsequently an awful war has ruined most everything or at least put some severe damage on them. After the previous marshal is murdered Joshua takes over in his position. Some fascinating plots are developing relating to the future of the St. Louis development.
I am willing to give any new science fiction show a chance, and thus far Defiance has exceeded my expectations. It doesn't try to copy any other drama in particular, and the cast is outstanding. I am beginning to find myself recognizing with some characters and disliking others.
I am so glad to hear that the Syfy renewed the show for season 2 with 13 episodes to premiere next year.
Given that they maintain a gripping story arc that keeps growing, while staying away from the trappings of too many "creature of the week" shows, it might develop into a series that lasts more than two seasons.
