"Yes, give me the names of animals!" In MGS 5: The Phantom Pain This statement is meant literally, because you will always be rewarded by mission statements with titles in the form of code names, all of which are based on animals because of your performances in stealth shooter.
In the following guide, we introduce you to all the codenames including activation conditions. In addition we show you how to get the special title "hero".
MGS 5 - The Phantom Pain: unlock code name - how it works
Are you a chicken, wolf or even whale? Your style of play in the last three missions decides your codename in Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain.
In the following overview you can see all the code names and their activation conditions.

CHICK | You have 6 unfinished missions |
CHICKEN | You have the chicken hat used at least once in the last three missions. |
FOXHOUND |
You have (perfect camouflage) triggered and not kill anyone (No firings) in the last three missions no battle status or reflection mode.

FOX | You have been undetected during the last three missions (Reflex mode is allowed). |
EAGLE | At least 90% of the defeated enemies were killed with head shots. |
PUMA | You have neutralized most opponents with raids. |
BEAR | You have neutralized most opponents with CQC techniques. These include throws, choking, combos, bionic-arm punches and kicks. |
OCTOPUS | You have killed most enemy with non-lethal weapons and equipment (indicated by the blue icon). |
MANTIS | You have killed most opponents by cutting the throat. |
BEE | You have killed most enemy with deadly handguns. |
SCORPION | You have the most deadly enemy with machine guns. |
PIRANHA | You have the most deadly enemy with guns. |
DOBERMAN | You have killed most enemy with deadly assault rifles. |
RAVEN | You have the most deadly enemy with machine guns. These include for example gun emplacements and the Minigun helicopter. |
WOLF | You have killed most enemy with deadly sniper rifles. |
SHARK | You have killed most enemy with deadly missiles. |
ORCA | You have the most enemy with deadly throwing weapons. |
SPIDER | You have killed most enemy with deadly weapons. |
HOG | You have killed most opponents ridden with D-Horse. |
HOUND | You have killed most opponents with D-Dogs command "Go" off. This requires the slow or combat fatigues for D-Dog. |
BUTTERFLY | You have killed most enemies quietly |
OSTRICH | You have killed most opponents at the wheel of D-Walker |
TORTOISE | You have killed most enemy with vehicles. |
HAWK | You have most opponents let off from support helicopters. |
WHALE | You have most opponents let off by fire by artillery support. |
BAT | You have used methods to eliminate enemies in exactly the same dimensions. For example, kill 10 enemies each with pistols and assault rifles. |
Get the ultimate codenamed "Hero"
Once you have exceeded your Heroism Points 150,000 and completed 31 missions, you will receive the code name "hero". This also turns the success or trophy free hero.
With the hero status your opponent are allowed FOBs infiltrate even if they have nuclear weapons as a deterrent. However, if your Heroism points fall below 100,000 points, you will also lose the hero status again.
