Find Pious, Needle in a Haystack Guide: KC Deliverance

Updated January 2025

This guide reflects the current understanding of the "Needle in a Haystack" quest in Kingdom Come Deliverance, focusing on a non-lethal approach to apprehending Pious.

Entering the Monastery:

Upon entering the Sasau Monastery after completing the tasks involving Karl and Manfred, it's advisable to store your belongings in a chest. This prevents potential bugs where your items are marked as stolen. The primary objective is to locate Pious, and while eliminating all monks is an option, it's not recommended.

Meeting Antonius:

Novice Antonius offers a tour of the monastery. While you can accept the tour for immersion, it's not necessary for completing the quest. You can skip the skill checks presented by Antonius.

Identifying Pious (Spoiler Alert: Antonius is Pious):

After Antonius's initial dialogue, engage him in conversation and choose the following options:

  • Tell him about your search for Pious.
  • Tell him that you plan to find and kill Pious.

You'll then have an opportunity to persuade Antonius to keep quiet. Whether you succeed or fail in this persuasion check doesn't impact the overall quest progression. This conversation reveals to Antonius that you're searching for him.

The Poisoning:

Continue with your daily monastic duties. You'll receive a warning if you neglect them. A quest update will trigger around noon, prompting you to attend lunch with the monks. A cutscene will play where you are poisoned. You'll then return to your dorm where Antonius, now visibly panicked, confronts you. He will then propose an alliance. It is crucial to agree to this alliance to capture Pious alive.

Acquiring the Blood/Note and Key/Lockpick:

After the poisoning and subsequent conversation, you and Antonius will plan your escape. Rest in your bed until shortly before midnight and consume a marigold potion to recover from the poison. It is important to perform the following tasks at night to avoid detection.

  • Blood/Note: Sneak into the kitchen's back room. You'll find either a container of blood or a note. If you find the note, interacting with it will trigger an order for a blood-filled goatskin. You'll need to wait until the following evening to retrieve it.
  • Key/Lockpick: From the kitchen's back room, proceed to the pantry and then to a room beyond. Search a shelf for the key. Due to the darkness, it can be difficult to spot. Move around the shelf until the interaction prompt appears.

If you cannot find the key, you have two options for obtaining a lockpick:

  • Brother Cellarius: You can ask Brother Cellarius for a lockpick, but he will require you to steal food from the kitchen in return.
  • Altar: A lockpick can be found behind the left wing of the triptych at the altar.

The Escape and Apprehension:

Once you have the blood/note and the key/lockpick, return to Antonius (Pious), typically found in the monastery garden. Arrange a meeting in the dormitory after evening mass.

At the meeting, follow Antonius outside. You now have the choice to let him escape or apprehend him. To capture him, you must win a brief fistfight. A cutscene will then play where you present Antonius (Pious) to the bailiff. You'll receive 300 groschen as a reward. You can later visit him in his cell.

Alternative Outcomes:

  • Killing Pious: You can kill Pious at various points, either before entering the monastery, during the escape, or after capturing him. However, this will not result in the same reward and may have other consequences.

This updated guide focuses on a non-lethal approach to the "Needle in a Haystack" quest, allowing you to apprehend Pious and receive the full reward.
