Updated January 2025
This updated guide reflects current knowledge and best practices for completing the "Pestilence" quest in Kingdom Come: Deliverance, focusing on healing the sick villagers of Merhojed.
Prerequisites:
- Completion of the "Mightier Than the Sword" quest (for reading ability).
Initial Steps in Merhojed:
- Speak with Melichar to receive permission to interrogate the prisoner after curing the plague.
- Crucially: Before traveling to Sasau, thoroughly investigate the sick villagers. Visit the five houses marked with white crosses. This is essential for diagnosing the illness correctly.
Investigating the Sick:
Visiting each house provides crucial information about the symptoms. While the following side quests are optional, they offer additional context and rewards:
- Dig Grave: Bedrishka's husband has died. Digging his grave before leaving for Sasau is necessary to complete this task. Failing to do so will result in failure.
- Testament: Vincent asks you to write his will and deliver it to Father Fabian in Sasau. This task can be completed after curing the plague.
- Travel to Sasau and speak with Johanka in the monastery (you may know her from "In God's Hands"). She will direct you to Brother Nicodemus, located in the sickbay, usually near the alchemy table.
- Essential Preparation: Before speaking extensively with Nicodemus, purchase the following ingredients:
- 2x Thistle
- 1x Charcoal
- 1x Nettle
- If Nicodemus is out of charcoal, check the blacksmith in southern Sasau. Buying these before the key conversation prevents a frustrating backtracking later. After the conversation, Nicodemus will travel to Merhojed and will no longer be available as a merchant.
Diagnosing the Plague:
- Describe the situation in Merhojed to Nicodemus, emphasizing the widespread illness affecting both people and animals.
- Nicodemus, assuming you can read, will instruct you to consult the Brevarium de Signis Causis, a book on a lectern directly behind him. You do not need to leave the room.
- Reading the book will reveal the cause: poisoned water.
Brewing the Remedy (Crucial Step):
- Absolutely choose the dialogue option to brew the remedy yourself. This is the fastest and most reliable way to save the villagers. Relying on Nicodemus to brew it will result in unnecessary delays and potential deaths.
Alchemy Guide:
- At the alchemy table, place the 2x Thistle, 1x Charcoal, and 1x Nettle on the shelf.
- Fill the cauldron with water.
- Add both Thistles to the cauldron.
- Use the bellows approximately four times to bring the mixture to a boil (watch for rising bubbles).
- Boil for two in-game hours (monitor the bubbles and use the bellows as needed to maintain boiling).
- Add the Nettle and bring the mixture back to a boil.
- Simmer for one in-game hour.
- Allow the mixture to cool completely (the fire under the cauldron will go out).
- Add the Charcoal.
- Use the vial to collect the potion. One batch is sufficient for the entire village.
Returning to Merhojed and Distributing the Cure:
- Return to Merhojed. Nicodemus will likely be in Straw's house, where his wife is also ill.
- Nicodemus will instruct you to administer the cure to five specific villagers. Follow his instructions.
- Important: You cannot treat the sick bandit until speaking with Melichar again. After doing so, you'll gain access to the cell. Administer the cure to the bandit and wait a few in-game hours.
- After treating the bandit, Straw will confront you. Choose the dialogue option to talk to him to avoid conflict.
Completion:
- Wait a few in-game days for the villagers to recover fully.
- Speak with Melichar to receive your reward (125 groschen and skill boosts).
By following these updated instructions, players can effectively cure the plague in Merhojed and complete the "Pestilence" quest successfully.
