As you may already be aware, collecting the necessary gold is a prerequisite for opening the chest. Once you have done that the next chest is typically more expensive because the chest's price is determined by how many characters you already possess.
The chest's cost increases by five gold each time you spawn a new character, and when it hits thirty gold, it increases by ten gold until it reaches a maximum of fifty gold. Don't worry, though; fusions will lower the chest's cost because the cost is dependent on the number of characters you have, so you probably won't have to pay 50 gold very often.
As you may be aware, when you gather three of the same character, a fusion is created automatically. This comes in quite handy during the battle, especially in the beginning because if you want to keep expanding your squad you have to make sure to fusion them, or else you will run into really expensive chests.
Also, you can get a free chest key by busting another player's squad, which makes the next chest free really useful.
