The beginning of October will probably see the release of Android 15 (Vanilla Ice Cream). Here is a quick rundown of the new features included in the latest Google mobile operating system.
In addition to minor changes, these are the main features of Android 15:
Private space for apps
Some apps on Android 15 may be hidden in a protected folder that only you can access using your unlock method. If you don’t want strangers to open your apps, this will stop them from doing so. The feature is similar to that of Samsung's "Secure Folder". You have the option to use a different Google account for your private space if needed.
How to setup Private space on Android 15:
Opens the settings
Tap “Privacy & security” > “Private space”.
Unlock your device, tap “Set up” and follow the wizard.
During setup, you can choose your existing unlock method or another lock to unlock the private space.
To access your private space, first open the App drawer, this is an overview of all Apps. After scrolling down, tap the newly added lock symbol. You can now launch already installed apps or install new ones in the private space of your device after unlocking it. Most Google apps are already displayed with a key symbol at the bottom. This means that you can use the private space to start them right away. For instance, Android 15 recognizes the YouTube app as two independent programs that you can switch between if you launch it from the private space and then again from the regular mode.
By default, your private space will only relock after you restart your device, unless you manually lock it every time. On the other hand, you can program it to lock automatically again after five minutes or each time you lock your device.
To setup automatically lock private space go to "Settings" > "Privacy & Security" > "Private Space" > "Automatically Lock Private Space".
Sharing and recording individual apps
According to Android developers, sharing a particular app is supported in Android 15. As a result, sharing the full screen is no longer necessary. It's similar with recordings: you can now capture certain apps rather than the full screen.
Here’s how to add a single app to Android 15:
In the quick settings, select screen recording
Indicate above that only one app should be included
Now select the app you want to record
When you're done, you can pause, save, and share the recording again using the notifications at the top
Backup and restore split-screen app session
Previously, you could run two apps simultaneously on Android thanks to the split-screen mode. These app sessions will now also be saved. By creating a shortcut on your home screen, you can then instantly access the two apps side by side again.
New camera mode
There's a Low Light feature that comes with Android 15. According to Android developers, the night mode and the Android camera package both have this automatic exposure feature.
New volume setting
Based on the CTA-2075 loudness standard, Android 15 gets a new volume controller. By managing volume fluctuations, you may avoid having to continuously adjust the volume when switching between different programs or content.
The volume controller in the settings remains largely unchanged from the one found in Android 14. But now at the top, you can choose a different device. Apparently, you can also adjust the volume on other connected devices this way:
Passkey for faster logins
With the help of the new Passkey function, passwords should be replaced and the process made simpler so that you may quickly and securely unlock your screen in just one step.
Satellite support
Android 15 now also supports satellite connections.
Who gets Android 15 (supported devices)?
As usual, the newest version of Android will be released first for Google's Pixel smartphones. Only then will manufacturers like Samsung follow.
