It is far smoother and more pleasing to watch animations on smartphones at 90 or even 120 Hertz (Hz) as opposed to the old 60 Hz refresh rate. Here is the refresh rate information for the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Pro models: An LTPO display with a maximum refresh rate of 120 Hz is featured in the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Adaptive refresh rate makes this automatically change based on what's displayed on the screen. This lowers the amount of energy used.
Regular models: Both the iPhone 16 Plus and the basic edition of the iPhone 16 use an OLED display with outdated 60 Hz technology. For this reason, the screens consistently reflect a fixed 60 Hz. There's not a built-in adjustability.
Why do the two standard models only have 60 Hz? Apple most likely wants to encourage customers to purchase the more costly Pro models. The tech company has done something similar with the internal memory. In the past, models with larger storage capacities (starting at 256 GB) cost a lot more.
Though hard to believe in 2024, but its true: The iPhone 16 and the Plus model both have displays that run at 60 Hz. That's somewhat harsh when you take into account that the smartphones cost $799 (128GB) and $899 (128GB), respectively. Since panels on Android smartphones that typically cost between $250 and $400 now feature a refresh rate of 120 Hz.
A dynamic refresh rate of 120 Hz is shared by the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Motions and animations are typically significantly smoother, especially in games and films.
